Headlines in the sports world over the weekend

Boston Mountain Publishing, Monday October 31, 2022 - 9:57 AM

NFL

The Buffalo Bills took on the Green Bay Packers in the late game Sunday night in Buffalo. Green Bay ran for 208 yards on the day, but it wasn't enough as the Bills held the lead all night. The Packers have lost 4 straight to fall to 3-5 on the year. Buffalo leads the AFC East with a 6-1 record on the year.

The Philadelphia Eagles hosted the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, and it wasn't much of a game winning 35-13. The Eagles lead the NFL with a 7-0 record sitting atop the tightly contested NFC East division.

The Dallas Cowboys remain near the top of the close NFC East division after their win over the Chicago Bears on Sunday afternoon in Dallas 49-29. The Bears tried to keep it close but every time they made a run, they ended up turning over the ball and they could not gain any momentum in this one. Cowboys QB Dak Prescott had a decent game finishing with 250 passing yards with 2 TDs and 1 INT. Dallas didn't play their leading RB Ezekiel Elliott as he was out on Sunday with a knee injury. Tony Pollard filled in for him at RB and had 131 rushing yards with 3 rushing TDs on the day. Note: This is the most points the Cowboys have allowed to an opposing team this season. The Cowboys move to 6-2 on the year and the Bears fall to 3-5 on the season.

The Seattle Seahawks have quietly climbed the ladder in the NFL this season and are sitting atop the NFC West division after taking down one of the top teams in the NFC East the New York Giants 27-13 on Sunday. They are 5-3 on the year, 1 game ahead of the 49ers. The Giants are 6-2 and tied with the Cowboys in the East.

The player of the weekend goes to Christian McCaffrey who became the 1st player since LaDainian Tomlinson to score a touchdown on the ground, through the air, and he threw a TD in the win for his new team, the San Francisco 49ers (4-4) on Sunday afternoon over their division rival the Los Angeles Rams (3-4).

Game of the Week

OHIO STATE 44 vs PENN STATE 31

Beaver Stadium - University Park, PA

The score doesn’t exactly show what happened here. Penn State was in control for much of the game and it was looking like it may turn into the upset of the week. In the 4th Quarter when Penn State was driving, Ohio State caused a strip sack that put the game out of reach as Ohio State would then score and had all the momentum going their way.

Ohio State (8-0) and Michigan (8-0) are the leaders of the Big 10 East are still undefeated and after both teams have beat Penn State (6-2) in back-to-back weeks. There’s no telling who the better team is, and the division is trending towards a big matchup in the final weekend of the regular season between the two rivals.

- Georgia moves to 8-0 after destroying rival Florida 42-20 in the neutral site game in Jacksonville.

- Tennessee (8-0) looked unstoppable in a blowout against rival Kentucky 44-6 in Knoxville.

- Michigan now 8-0 after beating rival Michigan State in the Big House 29-7 on Saturday afternoon. Things turned ugly after the game when both teams were headed to the locker room and a few Michigan State players took their aggression out on a couple of the Michigan players. Formal charges will be presented to the players involved. More to come this week with this story.

Christopher Bell who led most of the day, decided to pit for new tires when a yellow flag came out with 34 laps to go in the race which allowed Chase Briscoe to take the lead when he decided against getting new tires for the final run down the stretch.

Coming out of the yellow flag with 24 laps remaining, Bell had dropped 4 spots and Briscoe continued with the lead. Briscoe in the #14 car fought to remain in the lead for another 19 laps while Bell and his new tires crept up and bumped him to move inside and overtake the field with 3 laps to go. To secure a spot in the Championship 4, Bell and his #20 car had to take the checkered flag on Sunday for a shot at the Cup, exactly what he did. Martinsville was his 3rd victory on the season.

Ross Chastain had an unbelievable final lap on Sunday which propelled him to the final spot in the Championship 4. He rode the rail and outpaced everyone to secure his place next week. It's worth looking up if you have a minute. FINAL LAP
